2nd Annual Cleanup

Cleanup Reaps Remarkable Trash Collection

Shag carpet, bed springs, and a sewing machine were part of the three truck loads of trash hauled away from the Hilltop Reservation on Sunday April 24th. Members of the Hilltop Conservancy met at the Fairview Avenue, Cedar Grove entrance to the Reservation and conducted the second annual clean-up event. Dozens of tires, bottles, a mag wheel, apothecary jars, flasks, electrical equipment, wiring, gutters, a piston, cans, a metal drawer and a champagne bottle were also pulled out from under layers of leaves and dirt. Two of the workers mused that the event would have been a garbologist's dream.

The trash was piled up on Hilltop roadways where it was picked up and hauled off by men and a truck provided by Essex County. Indeed, they were not able to haul all of it away on Sunday and will return for the rest later in the week. The event was so successful, the Hilltop Conservancy may schedule another cleanup later in the year.

Essex County Hospital Building 33 sits adjacent to the Fairview Avenue Hilltop Reservation entrance. Papers, including many county files and records, are strewn on the ground behind Building 33, making this entrance to the Hilltop unsightly. This cleanup effort did not include picking up this debris.

Hilltop Conservancy members welcome visitors to the Hilltop and invite them to enjoy this beautiful wooded area in the midst of busy Essex County. Bring a bag! The Conservancy is grateful for ongoing cleanup help. Trash, bagged by visitors, will be collected from refuse cans found along roadways in the Reservation.

The Hilltop Conservancy wishes to thank all members and visitors who participated in this event. And thank you to the County of Essex for providing people power and a truck so necessary to the success of this effort. Together we can continue to make the Hilltop Reservation a natural, healthy place for us all.
